- Nam Tchun Mo
Born in 1961, Nam Tchun-Mo graduated from the Department of Painting and Graduate School of Fine Arts at Keimyung University and is gaining attention as a next-generation monochrome painter. Nam Tchun-Mo's work starts with 'lines.' In his work, lines are erected three-dimensionally on the plane, creating a space of their own. He expresses images of nature and changing light transparently, simply, and repetitively. His work possesses the common denominator of 'repetitiveness' in monochrome paintings, and what classifies him as a post-monochrome painter lies in his materials. The use of industrial materials such as cloth and synthetic resin, signs of industrial society, along with the uniqueness of the work, make Nam Tchun Mo's colors even more distinct.
Nam Tchun Mo's work lies at the boundary of sculpture and painting, which is referred to as 'sculptural painting.' A new approach to Nam Tchun Mo's painting begins with the idea that painting can be generated from a frame. His work involves labor-intensive, simple yet demanding processes to create a unit. Each unit he creates merges with other units and eventually becomes one piece of artwork.
He creates space on the canvas, grants meaning to that space, and reveals the 'coincidence' created through light and shadow within it. Exploring how the lines of drawing that constitute the 'memory of lines' eventually evolve into space, how they can reach the unconsciousness of art from space, and how the artist's thought can be transformed into a formal language are the purposes of Nam Tchun Mo's work.“나의 작업은 개인적으로 마음 속에서 피어나는 ‘아지랑이와 같은 향기’ 를 드러내고자 하는데 있다. 이런 분명한 물질감 너머의 향기가 투명한 것 너머에서 배어나는 색채감으로 표현되는 것 같다.”

남춘모(b.1961)는 계명대학교 미술대학과 동대학원에서 회화과를 졸업하고 차세대 단색화 작가로 주목받고 있다.
남춘모의 작업은 ‘선’에서 출발한다. 그의 작업에서 선들은 평면 위에 입체적으로 세워져 선 자체로의 공간을 창조한다. 그는 자연과 빛이 변화하는 이미지를 투명하고 단순하게 그리고 반복적인 작업을 통해 표현해 낸다. 그의 작업은 단색화의 공통 분모인 ‘반복성’을 지니고 있으며, 그를 후기 단색화 작가로 분류하는 것은 재료에 있다. 산업 사회의 징후인 천, 합성 수지 등 공업용 재료의 사용은 작품의 독창성과 더불어 남춘모의 색깔을 더욱 뚜렷하게 만들어낸다.
남춘모의 작품은 조각과 회화의 경계에 있어 이를 ‘부조회화’ 라고 부른다 남춘모의 회화에 대한 새로운 접근은 그림이 틀로부터 생성될 수 있다는 생각에서 시작한다. 그의 작업은 노동집약적이고, 단순하면서도 까다로운 공정을 거쳐 하나의 단위를 만든다. 그가 만들어낸 각각의 단위는 다른 단위들과 합쳐지고 마침내 하나의 작품으로 만들어진다.
그는 캔버스 위에 공간을 만들고 그 공간에 의미를 부여하고 그 속에서 빛과 그림자를 통해 만들어지는 ‘우연’을 보여준다. ‘선에 대한 기억’을 구성하는 드로잉의 선들이 결국 공간 속으로 어떻게 진화해 가는지, 거꾸로 한 공간으로부터 어떻게 미술의 무의식에 도달할 수 있는지, 지극히 개인적으로는 작가의 마음 속 아지랑이 향기를 어떻게 조형언어로 전환할 수 있는지를 탐구하는 것이 남춘모 작업의 목적이다.
