Hyeongmin Moon (b. 1970) is to hold a solo exhibition at the LEEAHN GALLERY from May 26 to July 10, 2016. Moon has been raising questions about universal truths or our conventional wisdom through many serial works of , <9 Objects> and .

Moon casts doubts on social phenomena taken for granted, i.e., systems, custom, conventional wisdom and unconditional beliefs, and observes by whom and how these aspects are created and changed as well as their effects from the most objective perspective possible so as to give audiences some room to think and analyze for themselves. Moon’s elaborate works characterized by vivid colors and simple but sophisticated structures spontaneously appeal to the eyes of audiences, who in turn answer the questions raised by the artist.

The ponders upon the objectivity of statistics. Moon ranks the words and colors extracted from high-profile magazines, e.g., the Art in America, the Times, and the Playboy, in order of their frequency of exposure, which is part of a statistical attempt. Then, top 10 words and colors are picked and matched up to convert the words to colors and to draw certain lattices on the canvas. Whether the ten colors used in each work reflect the identity of the media given or social issues of the year is left to the discretion of audiences.

In the <9 Objects> series, same-sized images of nine objects most cherished by someone are arranged against an identical backdrop in an identical composition with intent to make audiences encounter the objects per se without any additional effects and thus see the status quo without importing their feelings while excluding the fact that someone values those objects. Deleting the relationship between those objects and their owners, Moon provides the opportunity to revisit the conventional belief that photography is about recording the moments of our life.

In the series questioning the relationship between systems and art as well as between systems and the public, newspaper headlines are arranged in a high modernist mode with innocence and purity being maximized. Disassembled illegible words are inscribed in a modern aesthetic style on a pure background artistically emphasized, which seems to vicariously represent underlying social issues.

Moon’s works of art conveying his consistent and vivid intention are going to engage audiences with an opportunity to rethink about and critically accept what they have mindlessly taken for granted.

Hyeongmin Moon was born in 1970, majored in fine art at Pasadena Art Center College of Design and graduated from the Graduate School of California State University. He has given solo exhibitions at the Sungkok Art Museum (2004), the Gallery Ssamzie (2005), the Seomi & Tuus Gallery (2008) after his first exhibition at the Insa Art Space in 2002. He has also exhibited his works in Germany and Singapore and joined a number of group exhibitions at the Seoul Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Guild Gallery (Mumbai) and the Total Art Museum. At present, Moon’s works are housed at the Gyeonggi Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art and the National Museum of Contemporary Art.

리안갤러리는 2016년 5월 26일부터 7월 10일까지 보편적 진리나 사회적 통념에 의문을 제기하는 문형민(b. 1970)의 개인전을 개최한다. 작가는 특히 이번 리안갤러리 전시에서 〈By numbers series〉 , 〈9 Objects〉, 〈Unknown Story〉연작들을 선보임으로써 이와 같은 작업 의도를 명확하게 드러낸다.

작가는 당연하게 받아들여지고 있는 사회 현상들, 예를 들면, 제도나 관습, 통념, 맹목적 신념들에 대한 의구심을 바탕으로, 이러한 것들이 누군가에 의해 어떻게 만들어지고 변화되어가는지, 어떤 영향을 미치는지를 관찰하고, 최대한 객관적인 자세를 견지하며 작업한다. 관객들에게 스스로 생각하고 해석할 수 있는 기회를 제공하기 위함이다. 선명한 색감과 단순하고 세련된 구조를 가진 완성도 높은 작품을 통해 일차적으로 시각적 관심을 유도한 후, 작가가 던진 주제에 대한 질문에 관객이 답할 수 있게 하는 공통된 작업 방식을 보이는 이유이기도 하다.

작가의 대표 연작 〈By numbers series〉는 통계의 객관성에 대한 고찰이다. 이 작업은 Art in America, Times, Playboy와 같은 유명 잡지에서 단어와 색을 추출하여 빈도수에 따라 각각의 순위를 매기는 통계 작업에서부터 시작된다. 그 중 상위 10개의 단어와 색을 선택하고, 순위에 따라 단어와 색을 매칭하여 단어를 색으로 전환, 캔버스에 일정한 격자들을 그려낸다. 각 작품에 사용된 10개의 색이 해당 매체의 정체성 혹은 그 해의 사회적 이슈를 반영하고 있는지 여부는 관객들의 판단에 맡긴다.

누군가에게 가장 소중한 물건 9가지를 선택하게 한 후 각각의 사진을 찍어 나열한 <9 Objects> 연작은 동일한 배경에 동일한 구도 및 크기로 촬영된 물체를 통해 그 어떠한 효과도 없는 순수한 물체만을 마주하게 하는 작업으로, 한 개인의 소중한 물건으로서의 의미와 가치를 배제한 채 감정 개입 없이 현실 그 자체를 있는 그대로 보여준다. 물건과 주인과의 관계를 삭제하여 사진이 가지고 있는 순간성과 기록성에 대한 통념을 다시 생각해볼 수 있는 기회를 제공하는 것이다.

제도와 예술, 제도와 대중 간의 관계에 의문을 제기하는 〈Unknown Story〉 연작은 순수성이 극대화된 하이 모더니즘 시대의 작업 방식에 신문 헤드라인에 등장한 기사의 제목들을 나열하는 방식을 취한다. 모던하고 심미적인 형식, 즉, 예술적 순수성이 강조된 바탕에 관객들이 알아볼 수 없도록 단어를 해체하여 새김으로써 그 안에 담긴 사회적 이슈들을 간접적으로만 나타낸다.

이처럼 일관되고도 선명하게 드러나는 문형민 작가의 작업 의도처럼, 리안갤러리는 이번 전시가 관객들 스스로 그 동안 무심코 받아들여왔던 것들에 대해 다시 한 번 생각해보고 비판적으로 수용할 수 있는 계기가 되기를 기대한다.

문형민은 1970년 태어났으며, 패서디나 아트센터 칼리지 오브 디자인에서 순수미술을 전공하고 이후 캘리포니아 주립대학교 대학원을 졸업하였다. 2002년 인사미술공간에서의 전시를 시작으로 2004년 성곡미술관, 2005년 갤러리 쌈지, 2008년 서미앤투스 갤러리에서 개인전을 개최하였고, 독일과 싱가포르에서도 작품을 선보였다. 서울시립미술관, 뭄바이 The Guild Gallery, 토탈 미술관 등에서 열린 다수의 그룹전에 참여하였다. 현재 문형민의 작품은 경기도 미술관, 국립현대미술관에 소장되어있다.
