LEEAHN Gallery Seoul is pleased to present a solo exhibition of new works by Carlos Rolon (b. 1970-), a Chicago-based artist who is also known as Dzine, on view from March 12 to April 26, 2014. In five years since his first exhibition at LEEAHN Gallery Daegu, he will present ‘’Thinking of Forever’’, a new body of work that will include mirror paintings and custom-made sculptures, trophy and chandelier, in the new space.

Dzine has been recognized for his elaborately crafted paintings and ornate customized vehicles, particularly low-rider bike, based on the Kustom Kulture that was introduced by bikers in the U.S. during the 1950s and settled as a road culture in southern California during the 1960s. Simultaneously, in the context of the ‘custom made’ implying the convergence of heterogeneous objects, Dzine explores his own visual language by boldly blending heterogeneous and even conflicting components with one another in collision or harmony, for examples, East with West, Latin American with American cultures, street culture with contemporary art.

The exhibition ‘‘Thinking of Forever’’ focused on the artist’s dual identities especially inspired by Puerto Rican Culture. His sophisticated paintings, chandeliers and trophies give off his own autobiographical aspects in comparison to his paintings and custom-made bikes back in 2009 maximizing the decorative effects representing the culture collectively called Chicano Low-rider. Spending his childhood in Puerto Rican and American cultures, he has witnessed for his life how households have adapted to the new American lifestyles. A mirror was a particularly important interior item in his Puerto Rican home in that it was strategically placed for an optical illusion causing the space to look more spacious and magnificent, which reflects the immigrants’ psychology of escapism and characterizes their culture of preference for showy decoration. His classy mirror painting with the surface smoothed out by filling the cracks on a black mirror with crystals is a metaphoric expression of their essential household item as a sacred mosaic.

A series of custom-made trophy entitled ‘Emigrants_Immigrants’ made of crystals, metals and pure gold is part of homage to Newyoricans - referring to Puerto Rican immigrants in New York, particularly those residing in the central metropolitan area -, in which sense the trophies are installed in the gallery space in a way that some precious items are displayed at home. As the artist states “for people like my father and mother who came to the U.S for a better life with dreams and aspirations that never quite materialized, but still achieved success in other aspects of their life.”

*Chicano Low-rider: A Chicano refers to a Mexican American. The term was used to vilify early Mexican immigrants in the 1920s-30s. In general, these days, Chicano Low-rider refers to the Chicano gangster culture melting in literature, visual art, music and overall culture. The low-rider became a popular culture among Chicanos, where they crisscrossed the city driving their modified vehicles and motorcycles with a range of accessories and optional items added.

Dzine has exhibited extensively, both in the United States and Internationally. In 2007 he represented Ukraine as one of five artists in the 52nd Biennale di Venezia and is a recipient of the Joan Mitchell Foundation award for Painting and Sculpture. His work has been exhibited widely including solo exhibitions at The Dallas Contemporary (2013), Bass Museum of Art, Miami (2009), Museum Het Domein, Sittard, The Netherlands (2007), Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead, United Kingdom (2006), Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico, San Juan (2006) and Contemporary Art Museum, St. Louis (2005).

The British rock artist Eric Clapton (1945~) has become the first celebrity owning Dzine’ work, and his custom-made bike exhibited at Deitch Project in 2008 has been owned by Steven A, Cohen, an American hedge fund manager and also a prominent art collector. His work is in many museum and public collections such as the Bass Museum of Art, Miami; the Brooklyn Museum, NY; City of Chicago Public Art Collection, Illinois; Museo del Barrio, New York; Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico, San Juan; Museum Het Domein, Sittard, The Netherlands; Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego; Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas City; and the Pinchuk Art Centre, Kiev. He lives and works in Chicago, Illinois.

리안갤러리 서울은 2014년 3월 12일에서 오는 4월 26일까지 시카고를 근간으로 활동중인 디자인 (Dzine, 본명: 카를로스 로롱 Carlos Rolon 1970~ )의 두 번째 전시를 마련합니다. 지난 2009년 리안갤러리 대구에서 국내 첫 전시를 가진 이래 5년 만에 리안갤러리의 새로운 공간에서 선보이는 이번 전시에서 그는 특유의 제작기법이 돋보이는 블랙 미러 페인팅과 정교한 수공의 커스텀 메이드 조각, 설치 등의 신작을 소개합니다.

디자인은 화려하고 독특한 문양의 회화와 정교하게 제작된 로우 라이더 바이크(low-rider bike) 등의 커스텀 메이드 조각으로 명성을 얻었으며, 이는 50년대 미국의 바이커 들로부터 시작되어 60년대 남부캘리포니아의 로드문화로 자리잡은 커스텀 컬처 Kustom Kulture 에 예술적 근간을 두고 있습니다. 동시에 ‘커스텀 메이드’는 서로 다른 것들의 융합이란 맥락에서 작가는 이질적인 것들과 상반되는 요소, 예를 들어 동양과 서양, 고급문화와 하급문화 그리고 순수 미술과 디자인적 요소들의 충돌 또는 어우러짐을 과감하게 작품 속에 녹아내며 자신만의 시각언어를 탐구하고 있습니다.

이번 전시에서 선보이는 신작은 총 10 여 점으로, 2009년에 선보인 의 페인팅과 커스텀 바이크가 치카노 로우라이더로 통칭되는 문화의 대변으로 장식적 효과가 극대화를 이루었다면, 신작은 자신의 이중적 정체성에 주목하며 더욱 더 정교해진 수공이 돋보이는 페인팅과 샹드리에, 트로피 등을 통해 자전적 요소를 환기시키고 있습니다. 어린 시절 푸에르 토리코와 미국을 오가며 두 문화권에서 성장한 그는 인생 전반에 걸쳐 가정환경 또는 살림살이가 미국의 새로운 라이프 스타일에 적응해온 방식을 지켜보았습니다. 푸에르토리칸 실내 가정에서 특히 중요한 물건은 거울이었는데, 이는 공간을 더 웅장하고 넓게 보이게 하는 착시현상을 위해 전략적으로 놓은 것으로, 이민자의 현실도피적인 심리를 반영하는 동시에 화려한 장식을 좋아하는 그들 문화의 특징을 보여줍니다. 작가는 자신들의 생활에서 중요한 거울을 마치 성스러운 모자이크에 은유 하듯 검정색 거울에 균열을 만들고 그 사이를 크리스탈로 채운 후 매끈하게 표면 처리된 미러 페인팅을 완성합니다.

크리스탈과 메탈, 순금 등으로 제작된 빈티지 트로피 시리즈 ‘이민자들’ Emigrants_Immigrants 은 뉴요리칸 newyorican -뉴욕으로 이민 온, 특히 뉴욕 심장부인 메트로폴리탄 지역 내 거주하는 푸에르토리칸 –에게 바치는 트로피로서, 이는 집안 어딘가에 귀한 물건을 진열해놓듯 갤러리 공간에 설치되어 있습니다. 작가는 ”나의 부모님처럼 더 나은 삶을 위해 꿈과 포부를 안고 미국으로 건너와 비록 꿈을 실현하진 못했지만 인생의 또 다른 측면에서 성공을 이루고 있는 이들을 위한 기념비” 라고 작품을 말합니다.

*치카노 로우라이더 Chicano Lowrider: 치카노는 멕시코 계 미국시민을 칭하는 말로 1920-30년 미국이민 초창기 주로 멕시코인들을 비하하는 말로 사용되었지만, 일반적으로 문학과 시각예술, 음악 등 문화전반에 녹아있는 치카노 갱스터 문화를 말한다. 이들 사이에 유행한 로우라이더는 자동차나 모터사이클 등에 많은 액세서리와 옵션항목들을 더해 개조된 차를 몰고 무리 지어 도시를 누비는 문화를 말한다.

디자인(Dzine, 1970 ~ )은 시카고에 거주하며 작업활동을 하고 있으며, 장식적인 회화와 커스텀 메이드 바이크로 자신을 알렸습니다. 제 52회 베니스 비엔날레 우크라이나 국가관에 초대되었으며, 2007년 조안 미셀Joan Mitchell 파운데이션의 페인팅 및 조각 부문에서 수상한 바 있습니다. 미술관 전시로는 2013년 달라스 현대미술관 개인전을 비롯해 마이애미 바스 미술관(2009), 네덜란드 현대미술관(2007), 런던 발틱 현대아트센터(2006) 등의 국제 전시에 초대되었습니다. 영국 록 아티스트인 에릭 클랩튼(Eric Clapton, 1945~) 은 그의 작품을 소장한 첫 유명인사이며, 2008년 다이치 프로젝트(Deitch Project) 전시에 소개된 작가의 커스텀 메이드 오토바이는 미국의 거대 컬렉터인 스티브 코헨(Steven A. Cohen) 에게 소장되었습니다. 이 외에 뉴욕 브룩클린 미술관, 시카고 퍼블릭 아트 콜렉션, 키에프 핀축 아트센터, 상하이 유즈 콜렉션 등에 소장되어 있습니다.
