LEEAHN Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition of Jim Dine, ‘Sculpture & Painting’, at LEEAHN Seoul from May 2nd through June 9th. It is the artist’s second exhibition since the first solo show with LEEAHN in 2011. 

Dine’s first solo exhibition was held 19 years after the first introduction to Korean audience in 1992, gained heightened welcome and attention. Therefore, LEEAHAN prepared his second solo exhibition in a new space in Seoul. The exhibition composed of 10 works including sculpture and drawing with his ever-loving Pinocchio images, and also the artist’s best renowned works from Heart Painting series. 

Pinocchio is a main character from a world famous children’s storybook by Italian writer, Carlo Collodi, and it continuously served as a main motive in Dine’s work within most autobiographical context since 1997. The Pinocchio series includes not only sculptures in wood and bronze, but also various drawings and illustrations. Dine’s Pinocchio are made in various size and poses, such as raising its two arms up high, giving more lively feels to the figures. The figures of his Pinocchio and its roughly painted feature often reveal some unfinished quality in its color and shapes. Dine regards himself as Pinocchio, creating a symbol for challenge and passion of experimentation as an artist, which equates to the hardships and adventure that Pinocchio goes through within the story. Another series that represents the artist is Heart Painting, and it is not just a mere symbol for love but a symbol for greater meaning in emotion and passion. The works of this series plays for joyful melody with its diverse color palette. The exhibition at LEEAHN will introduce for the set of works that are visually pleasant as well as highly unique in its quality of medium and three-dimensionality. 

Jim Dine is the artist, who represents Post-war and contemporary art in America. He was born in Ohio and moved to New York in 1959. He often took kitsch objects from daily consumer lives and used in his work. The works started to gain much attention as Dine creates his unique style, which expresses usual objects in more sensible and expressionistic way. The artist was a pioneer in leading a trend of contemporary art, and his generation artists include Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, and Robert Rauschenberg. Dine was exclusively contracted with The Pace Gallery, New York since 1976. And his impressive works of drawing, painting, and sculptures are considered as one of most important pieces in the history of contemporary art.

리안갤러리에서는 2011년 짐 다인 작가의 첫 개인전에 이어 두 번째 전시, Jim Dine ‘Sculpture & Painting’ 를 오는 5월2일부터 6월9일까지 리안갤러리서울에서 개최합니다. 

1992년 우리나라에 처음 자신의 작품을 소개한 이후 19년 만에 한국에서 열었던 첫 번째 개인전에서 높은 관심과 주목을 받았으며, 2013년에는 리안 서울에서 작가의 두 번째 개인전을 마련하였습니다. 이번 전시에서는 피노키오(Pinocchio) 이미지를 모티브로 한 조각과 드로잉 그리고 작가의 대표작인 Heart Paintings 등 총 10 점의 작품들이 선보일 예정입니다.

1997년부터 작가의 작품에 등장하기 시작한 피노키오는 이탈리아 작가 카를로 콜로디의 동화 속 주인공인 피노키오(Pinocchio)로 작가의 가장 자전적이고 지속적인 모티프로 지난 10여년간 주요 작업의 소재로 다루어져 왔습니다. 나무와 브론즈로 제작한 조각뿐만 아니라 삽화나 드로잉 등 현재까지도 수많은 피노키오 연작을 작업하고 있으며 양팔을 들어올리거나 생동감 있는 여러 가지 제스처를 다양한 형태와 크기로 제작하고 있습니다. 짐 다인의 피노키오는 색채와 형태에 있어 언제나 미완성인 듯 특징적인 거친 채색과 형상을 하고 있습니다. 예술가로서 자신과 작품 속 피노키오를 동일시 하는 작가는 동화 속 피노키오의 역경과 모험을 예술가의 도전과 실험의 상징과 대상으로 창조하고 있습니다. 그리고 전시에 함께 소개되는 작가의 또 다른 대표적인 시리즈인 하트(Heart) 페인팅은 단순한 사랑의 상징으로가 아니라 감정과 열정의 총체적인 상징이며, 다양한 색채의 즐거운 변주를 담고 있는 작품입니다. 시각적으로 아름다우면서도 재질감과 입체감이 뛰어난 작업적 특징이 가장 잘 묻어나는 작업으로 이번 전시에 소개됩니다.

전후 미국현대미술의 대표 작가로 짐 다인은 오하이오 출신으로 1959년 뉴욕으로 이주, 60년대부터 일상 소비생활의 키치(kitsch) 한 것들을 예술 속에 끌어들이는 작업들을 발표했는데 우리가 흔히 볼 수 있는 오브제들을 감각적이면서 표현주의적인 기법으로 자신만의 작업 세계를 구축하며 화단의 주목을 받기 시작하였습니다. 앤디 워홀과 로이 리히텐슈타인, 로버트 라우젠버그 등과 함께 동시대 현대미술운동을 이끌어 온 작가는 1976년부터 세계적인 갤러리 페이스 갤러리(The Pace Gallery, New York)의 전속작가로 활동하고 있으며, 그의 인상적인 드로잉과 회화, 조각작품은 현대미술의 역사에서 빼놓을 수 없는 중요한 작품으로 평가 받고 있습니다.
