Born in 1953, Kim Keun Tai graduated from Chung-Ang University's Department of Painting and is a recognized artist as a next-generation monochrome painter.
Kim Keun Tai contemplates Eastern philosophy and encapsulates it on canvas with a simple yet profound resonance. Monochrome canvases devoid of form, such as white and brown, resemble ancient porcelain or moon jars. Much like a shaman performing rituals, he practices spirituality through visually revealing the world of immaterial lines. The temporality and performative nature revealed in the artist's attitude and process towards his work, along with the rustic and affectionate beauty rooted in Korean nature, are characteristics of Kim Keun Tai's work. This Korean beauty revealed in his work has also drawn attention in the global art market.
Kim Keun Tai has long equated his paintings with porcelain. Indeed, the pure white light of Kim Keun Tai’s works, as seen from the surface, bears a striking resemblance to the pristine brightness of porcelain, but it doesn’t merely stop at color. A simplicity, modesty, and honesty that are never lacking regardless of what is contained within, the pure and straightforward porcelain, is perhaps akin to the ultimate essence that Kim Keun Tai seeks through his work.
The thickly layered paint, constantly applied and then erased, is closer to an attitude towards life of trying to empty and erase rather than painting onto the canvas. The more he empties, the more the artwork transcends the flatness of the canvas's limitations, unfolding into a world without beginning or end. The artist claims that everything is consumed, leaving behind the essence, which he expresses through his paintings.

김근태 (b.1953)는 중앙대 회화과를 졸업하고, 차세대 단색화 작가로 주목받는 작가이다.
김근태는 동양의 철학을 사유하며 이를 단조롭지만 깊은 울림으로 캔버스에 담아내는 작가다. 형태가 없는 흰색, 갈색 등 단색의 캔버스는 마치 천 년의 백자, 달항아리와도 유사하다. 선사가 선을 수행하듯 그는 비물질적인 선의 세계를 시각적으로 드러내는 과정을 통해 정신을 수행한다. 작업을 대하는 작가의 태도와 과정에서 드러나는 시간성과 수행성, 그리고 작업의 바탕을 둔 소박하면서 정감 있는 우리나라 자연이 주는 아름다움은 김근태의 작업이 가진 특징이다. 이러한 한국적인 아름다움은 세계 미술시장에서도 그를 주목하게 했다.
김근태 작가는 줄 곧 백자에 자신의 그림을 비유해 왔다. 그도 그러한 것이 외관상으로 보여지는 김근태 작품의 하얀 빛깔과 백자의 청아한 흰 빛은 꽤나 닮아 있지만 꼭 그것이 색(色)에 그치는 것은 아니다. 무엇을 담아도 부족함이 없는 간결 소탈하고 단정 정직한 백자야 말로 김근태가 작품을 통해 찾으려고 하는 궁극적인 본질과 닮아 있을 것이다.
끊임없이 칠해 두껍게 올려진 물감은 캔버스에 칠해졌기 보다 오히려 비워내고 지워내려 하는 그의 삶에 대한 태도에 가깝다. 비워낼수록 작품은 캔버스의 한계인 평면성을 넘어 시작과 끝이 없는 세상을 펼쳐낸다. 작가는 모든 것을 연소하고 남은 알맹이, 그것이 그가 그림을 통해 표현 하고자 하는 것이라고 말한다.
