“한지를 덮고 쇠 솔로 갈아내는, 무한하며 무목적의 반복행위를 통해 제가 사라지는 것을 꿈꾸었습니다. 한지를 덮는 것은 저를 무효화 시키는 행위구요, 흰 눈으로 사물을 덮듯 제 자신의 추한 것, 모자란 것, 부끄러운 것을 속죄하는 마음으로 덮으려 한 것입니다. 원래 저의 이탈하려는 마음과 더불어 솔로 갈아낼 때마다 더럽고 추한 것들이 떨어져 나가길 바랬지요.”

이진우(b.1959)는 세종대 회화과를 졸업하고 파리 8대학과 파리 국립 미술대학교에서 조형미술학과 미술재료학을 연구했다. 린넨, 숯, 한지와 같은 독특한 동양적 재료를 활용해 만들어진 작업은 이진우만의 한국적 미감을 보여준다. 바인더 용액을 바른 린넨 위에 부순 숯을 올려 붙인 다음 그 위에 한지를 덮어 쇠솔로 문지르고 다시 한지를 덮어 붙여 쇠솔로 문지르는 작업을 반복한다. 노동집약적이고 반복적인 작업을 통해 작품에 입체감을 부여한다. 수행과 같은 과정의 작업을 하며 작가는 자신을 비우고 작업에 무게를 더한다.
"I dreamed of disappearance through infinite and aimless repetitive acts of covering with hanji and rubbing with iron brushes. Covering with hanji is an act of nullifying myself, like covering objects with white snow, I tried to cover my own pathetic, lacking, and shameful things with a heart of repentance. Along with my original desire to detach myself, I hoped that dirty and pathetic things would fall away every time I rubbed with the iron brush."

Lee Jin-woo (b. 1959) graduated from the Department of Painting at Sejong University and studied Sculpture and Materials Science at the University of Paris 8 and the National School of Fine Arts in Paris. The works created using unique Eastern materials such as linen, charcoal, and hanji demonstrate Lee Jin-woo's distinctive Korean sensibility. He repeats the process of applying crushed charcoal on linen coated with binder solution, then covering it with hanji, and rubbing it with an iron brush. Through labor-intensive and repetitive work, he gives depth to his works. While engaging in processes such as asceticism practices, the artist empties himself and adds weight to the work.
