대구를 기반으로 활동하는 신경철(b.1978)는 추상표현주의적인 회화 작업을 시도하는 화가이다. 

그의 작업은 밑 작업으로 드로잉을 한 후 색을 칠하는 통상적인 회화 작업의 순서를 전복해 물감을 묻힌 붓으로 형상을 그리고 그 형상 위에 연필로 드로잉 하는 새로운 방법론적 가능성이 돋보인다. 새로운 회화의 방식으로 그려진 이미지는 재-이미지화, 탈 이미지화되어 가시적인 대상으로서의 풍경에 한정되지 않고 정제되고 평화로운 풍경, 즉 모두가 갈구하는 근원적으로서의 풍경을 담는다.

작업방식, 재료, 주제, 소제 모두 작가의 내면에서 찾아 집요하게 파고든다. 신경철 작가의 작품은 내면의 기억 속 이미지에서 풍경성이나 공간성, 그리고 시간성을 배제하거나 비틀어서 평면화한다. 작품 앞에 선 관객 역시 본인 내면의 풍경을 소환한다. 구상과 추상의 경계에 있는 그의 작업은 기억과 경험의 경계 마저도 허물어버린다.

Shin Kyung-Chul (b. 1978), based in Daegu, is a painter who attempts abstract expressionist painting.

His work overturns the conventional order of painting, which typically involves drawing as a rough sketch followed by coloring, by painting the shapes and then drawing on top of those shapes with a pencil. This innovative methodical approach demonstrates new possibilities in painting. The images created through this new painting method transcend quintessential images by re-imaging and de-imaging, which allow no limitation to the visible subjects as landscapes but encapsulate refined and tranquil landscapes, representing the fundamental landscapes that everyone longs for.


Shin Kyung-Chul tirelessly delves into his inner self regarding work methods, materials, subjects, and themes. His works flatten the landscape and spatiality, as well as temporality, by excluding or distorting them from the images stored in the inner memory. The viewer standing before the work also brings out their inner landscapes. His works, existing on the boundary between conception and abstraction, even break down the boundaries between memory and experience.
