Kiki Smith was born in 1954 in Nuremberg, Germany, naturally began her journey into art by assisting her father with his sculpture work during her childhood. She now resides and works as a figurative sculptor in New York.
Since 1979, Kiki Smith has continued to primarily focus on works centered around the human body, earning her recognition as a leading figure among many artists who explore the philosophical, social, and spiritual aspects of human nature. Themes related to the body and feminism in Kiki Smith's work are deeply intertwined with the discourse of the art world during the 1980s, which prominently featured discussions on gender, homosexuality, and the fear of AIDS. The artist expresses resistance to and dissent against male-centric constructs, embodying female perspectives.
Her works are housed in major art museums and public collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Guggenheim, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
