Biography: Jung-Ouk Hong was born in 1975 and graduated from the Department of Painting at Hongik University and its graduate school, then went on to graduate from the Slade School of Fine Art at University College London. He currently serves as an assistant professor at the College of Fine Arts at Hongik University. He continuously experiments with forms and realization styles that allow for breathing within the entire space while maintaining the 'flatness' of painting, raising fundamental questions about the necessity of the square canvas form and why it always needs to be hung on a wall. The canvas, traditionally the support for painting, has been diversified into shapes such as triangles, pentagons, octagons, and circles, revealing its own formal qualities and harmonizing or resonating with elements inside or outside of its frame.

홍정욱은 1975년 태어나 홍익대학교 미술대학 및 동 대학원 회화과를 거쳐 영국 런던대학교 Slade 대학 회화과를 졸업한 후, 현재는 홍익대학교 미술대학 조교수로 재직 중이다. 그는 회화의 가장 기본이라고 할 수 있는 사각의 캔버스 형태와 이를 왜 항상 벽에 걸어야 하는가에 대한 본질적 의문을 제기하면서 회화의 ‘평면성(flatness)’을 유지하면서도 공간 전체와 호흡할 수 있는 형태와 실현 양식에 대한 실험을 지속하고 있다. 회화의 지지체로 존재하던 캔버스의 틀은 삼각형, 오각형, 팔각형, 원형 등의 도형으로 다변화되어 그 자체로서의 조형성을 드러내며 그 틀의 내부 혹은 외부의 요소들과 합일을 이루거나 조응한다.
