Biography: 데이비드 살리는 오클라호마주 노르마에서 1952년 태어났고 캔자스 주 위치타에서 성장했으며 California Institute of the Arts에서 미술 학사와 미술학 석사를 마쳤다. California Institute of the Arts에서 바바라 블룸, 잭 골드스타인, 매트 멀리컨, 제임스 웰링 같은 살리 세대의 작가들에게 영향을 준 개념 미술가, 존 발데사리를 스승이자 동료 작가로 만나게 된 데이비드 살리는 회화를 향한 열정과 헌신으로 끈기 있게 회화를 연구해 오며 20세기말 현대미술을 대변하는 작가로 주목받아 왔다. 1980년대에는 뉴욕으로 이주하여 리차드 프린스, 신디 셔먼, 로버트 롱고, 토마스 로슨 등과 작업하였으며, 휘트니 미술관, 구겐하임 빌바오, LA MOCA, 메트로폴리탄 미술관 등에서 전시를 가졌다.
1970년대 후반부터 1980년대 초까지 대중매체에서 자주 등장하는 이미지를 차용했던 데이비드 살리의 회화에서 차용 이미지(appropriated image)는 작품을 구성하는 논리의 중심을 이룬다. TV와 패스트푸드에 길들여지고 모든 것이 일회용품으로 대체될 수 있는 첫 세대에 속한 그는 팝 아트와 뮤직, 저항 정치학의 영향을 받았고 개념이 이미지와 대상화 된 작품을 대신하는 시대에 무엇을, 그리고 누구를 위한 예술인가, 도대체 예술이란 무엇인가? 라는 질문을 다시 던지며 회화 페인팅에 끈기 있는 자세로 열정과 헌신을 쏟아왔다.
'뒤섞임과 혼합'은 살리의 작품임을 알리는 대표적인 특징이라고 할 수 있다. 특정 시대와 지역적 색깔들이 드러난 살리의 회화에서 다양한 문화적 기호들을 식별해내는 일, 하나의 화면에 주제, 기법, 스타일을 얼마나 간결하고 정확하게 결합시켜왔는가를 순수 회화의 관점에서 살펴본다면 훨씬 더 흥미로운 일이 될 것이다. 같은 이미지를 가지고 사진과 회화 양쪽에서 접근하여 회화적 이미지와 사진 이미지의 조합을 이루어 내는 것은 회화의 세계에서 데이비드 살리가 이룬 주된 성과다.

David Salle was born in Norman, Oklahoma in 1952 and grew up in Wichita, Kansas, completing his Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts at the California Institute of the Arts. Meeting the conceptual artist John Baldessari, who influenced Salle and other artists of his generation such as Barbara Bloom, Jack Goldstein, Matt Mullican, and James Welling at the California Institute of the Arts, David Salle has been dedicated to the study of painting with passion, emerging as a prominent artist representing late 20th-century contemporary art. In the 1980s, he relocated to New York, collaborating with artists like Richard Prince, Cindy Sherman, Robert Longo, and Thomas Lawson, and exhibited in prestigious institutions such as the Whitney Museum of American Art, Guggenheim Bilbao, LA MOCA, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
From the late 1970s to the early 1980s, the appropriated images in David Salle's paintings, which frequently appeared in mass media, formed the core logic of his works. Belonging to the first generation accustomed to TV and fast food, where everything could be replaced with disposable items, he was influenced by pop art, music, and the resistance politics. He posed questions such as "What is art for, and for whom, in an era where concepts replace images and objects?" and poured passion and dedication into his painting with perseverance.
‘Mixing and Blending’ is the characteristic feature that signifies Salle's work. Identifying various cultural symbols in Salle's paintings that reveal specific eras and regional colors and observing how effectively and accurately he combines subjects, techniques, and styles on one canvas would be an intriguing source examining his work of art. David Salle's primary achievement in the world of painting is the combination of painterly images and photographic images by approaching the same image from both the perspectives of photography and painting.
