Kim Tschoon-Su (b. 1957) graduated from the Department of Painting at the Undergraduate and the Graduate School of Seoul National University. He also earned his master's degree from California State University and completed his doctoral studies at New York University in Mathematics, then returned to Seoul National University as a professor of Western Painting.
The representative work 'Ultra-Marine', which he began presenting in earnest since 2002, originated from the fundamental question, 'What is painting?'
His 'Ultra-Marine' appears to be just one color, blue, but it is a deep and blue imbued with various lights of nature. While the use of blue color stems from the artist's preference, it is utilized as a tool to infuse dynamic rhythm into the painting rather than holding its own significance. He is praised for aligning the 'physical act' with the world of his artwork through a drawing method that involves applying paint to the canvas with fingers, a part of the body, without using a brush.
A completed work created by dipping hands in every spectrum of blue and directly applying them to the canvas, then erasing with white paint, unveils a harmony of countless lines and surfaces on the screen. As scientific technology advances, the artist seeks modernity by shifting focus towards humanity. Works drawn with fingertips using gestures become a process of finding answers to the question 'What is humanity?' thus embodying the artist's life.

김춘수(b.1957)는 서울대학교 회화과와 동대학원을 졸업하고 캘리포니아 주립대학교 석사 및 뉴욕대학교에서 수학 후 모교 서울대학교 서양화과 교수로 재직했다.
2002년부터 본격적으로 선보이는 대표작 '울트라-마린(Ultra-Marine)'은 '회화란 무엇인가'라는 근본적 질문으로부터 시작되었다.
김춘수의 ‘울트라-마린(Ultra-Marine)’은 파랑이라는 한 가지 색으로 보이지만 자연의 온갖 빛을 머금은 깊고 푸른색이다. 푸른 색의 사용은 작가의 선호에서 시작되었지만 그 자체로 의미를 지니기보다는 그림에 역동적 리듬을 담는 도구로 사용된다. 붓을 사용하지 않고 신체의 일부인 손가락으로 화면에 물감을 묻혀 나가는 그리기 방식으로 ‘신체적 행위’와 작품세계를 일치시킨다는 평가를 받는다.
청색의 모든 스펙트럼을 손에 묻혀 직접 캔버스에 바르고 흰색 물감으로 지워 나가는 방식으로 완성된 작품은 무수한 선과 면의 조화로 화면에 드러난다. 과학 기술이 발전할수록 작가는 인간에 집중하는 태도에서 현대성을 찾고자 한다. 몸짓을 동원해 손가락 끝으로 그려지는 작품은 '인간성이란 무엇인가'에 대한 해답을 찾는 과정이 되어 작가의 삶을 녹여낸다.
